FACT: Almost ever swing set canopy is a different size. It’s the truth. In all the time we have made custom playset tarps. It is very rare that we come across existing art we have done that is the exact dimesion a customer submits. Every playset a little bit different which makes finding a replacement swing set canopy a task in itself. At Wrap City Blue, we try to make that process easy.

At Wrap City Blue the process of replacing your playset canopy is 4 easy steps.

    1. Measure your playset roof dimensions.
    2. Calculate your swing set canopy sq. ft.
    3. Order the playset tarp design that you (or your kids) like.
    4. Install your replacement playset canopy with washer screws.

Steps to replace your playset canopy

Step 1: Measuring for your replacement playset tarp

If your existing swingset canopy is still one solid piece, the simpliest way to measure for your replacement tarps is to remove your existing playset canopy. Lay it as flat as you can and measure the width and height. Now we know that sometimes playset tarps are shredded, ripped or complete missing, so measuring your existing tarp may not be an option.

For instances when no playset tarps exists, we recommend taking measurements directly from the swingsets frame. It can sometimes take 2 people – one to hold the tape measure where the tarp will attach to the playset; and another to take the tape measure over the peak and down to where it will attach. See the graphic below for 2 ways to measure and install.

See the installtion and  measuring guide graphics for better explanation.

We recommend measuring your actual playset from where you plan to attach it, over the peak and down to where you plan to attach it. The length of your measuring tape is the size to order. We also recommend to round up to the nearest inch, as we cannot trim to fraction inches and our trim variance on large sheets of vinyl is “0.25”.

Wrap around  inside mount playset canopy installation:
This swingest canopy installation hides the grommets and screws. It wraps under the bean to the inside of the playset.

Outside mount:
The playset tarp is mounted on the outside facing beam.

Step 2: Calculating the Square Foot of your custom size swing set canopy playset tarp…ugh…math.

All replacement playset tarps are sold by square feet. As the amount of vinyl your canopy uses place a big part on how much material, ink, UV coating is used, as well as the shipping  costs. We try to make the calculations easy for you. Afgter measuring and getting the inch dimesions of your width and height follow these calculations.

Calculating your size – using inches to calculation sq. ft:
To calculate square feet using inches: Width (inches) x Length (inches) ; then divide by 144 = Square Feet

Example: Your measure are 44 inches and 88 inches

44″ x ″101 = 4,444 square inches (/divided by) 144 = 30.86 square feet

You would round up to the nearest sq. ft. size available and order the (up to 35 sq. ft.)

Step 3: Ordering your custom size replacement playset tarp

Ordering your custom sized playset tarp:
After you have decided on a design and you calculate your square foot size of your canopy (directions step 2), you are ready to order.

First you would select the appropriate square foot size. This is figured out by taking your calulatuons and rounding up to the nearest 5 sq. ft.  (for instance your calculation equal 78.9, you would round up and order the (up  to 80 sq. ft.) size.

Then enter your actual width and height dimensions into the field provided for actual dimesions. We do not trim to fraction of inches. Cutting vinyl is not an exact science, so there is a 0.5″ trim variance, meaning the trim and heat seal will be within 0.5″ larger or smaller than what you order. We recommend rounding up to the nearest inch if you do not have an exact measurment.

Grommets placements:  By default are placed on the shortest dimension, as 99% of all playset canopies mount that way. If you need your grommets on the longer dimension. Please leave a order comment and email or call us so that we can be certain to set up your swing set canopy correct.

Step 4: Installing your replacement playset tarp

Inastallation is easy, but usually require 2 or 3 people to hold everything in place. All of our swing set canopies come with grommets every 2-3 feet. To install follow these suggestions:

    1. Remove any existing snap or screws from previous playset tarp
    2. Look for and remove any obstrcutions like sharp wood slivers that could rub against or rip through the vinyl
    3. Get washer screws from your local hardware store. We have found shipping sharp objects with your tarps is not a good idea, as packages get knocked around in shipping. So the washer screws are easy to find at any hardware store. They should rest up against the grommet metal, not the vinyl.
    4. Screw in through the grommets. We have found that grommets offer the most versitile installation. There is no lining up to previous snals and they are easily attached and able to be repositioned with washer screws. We recommend taking down the playset canopy in areas that get harsh winters, as even through the vinyl is very thick, durable and strong – at some point the weight of a wet snowfall will win.
    5. Your playset tarp should have a natural  hang to it. If it is too loose it will be more likely to collect water. Too tight and there is no give for the wind to naturally flow through. If you notice that your playset tarp has alot of slack in it, it is a good idea to tighten and re attach a little tighter.
